Coverage planning and operator displays

This project focuses on planning inspection coverage inside a tank and presenting that plan clearly to the operator. I’m developing route-planning concepts alongside the display, so the intended path, inspection progress, and obstacles can be considered together.

Planning inspection coverage

I created concepts for straight-line passes, tangent arcs, and back-and-forth coverage routes. These patterns address different parts of the inspection task, from following a curved tank boundary to organizing passes across the interior.

The planning work connects those paths to a visual representation of the tank. The goal is to let an operator understand the intended coverage as a complete plan, rather than having to interpret a sequence of individual movement commands.

Operator display and progress tracking

I’m developing ways to show the planned route, mission progress, and obstacles in the same interface. This keeps the inspection plan connected to the information the operator needs while following the robot’s progress.

An important distinction is the difference between planned coverage and completed inspection. The interface needs to keep those concepts separate so that drawing a route does not imply that the robot has already followed it or collected data along it.

Current status

The work remains at the concept and prototype stage. Hardware validation, including positioning accuracy and repeatable execution of the planned routes, has not yet been established.
